On February 4, 2022, Mohan Foundation’s Anudaan team received an email from Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi requesting financial aid for Master Iyan Gupta’s liver Transplant, who was suffering from a chronic liver disease and liver cirrhosis. He was in need of an urgent liver transplant.

Master Iyan Gupta, age 7 months hails from Sonitpur district in Assam. He belongs to a poor family. His father is a shopkeeper, selling fruits. With the meagre income, it was difficult for him to pay for medicines and treatment of his son. Iyan suffered from mild fever, paleness of eyes & stomach swelling when he was 3 months old. Distressed parents immediately took him to Christian Missionary Hospital near their hometown. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all doctors were busy attending covid patients. The parents had to wait for a long period of time to be able to finally see a doctor. Iyan was given some medicines with the assurance that he would be fine after some weeks. According to the doctor, due to extreme hot weather, the child got sick and that it was nothing serious.

Iyan turned 6 months but his pain and suffering was not over.  His eyes were pale and stomach was still swelling. Many people suspected that Iyan was suffering from Jaundice and his blood test should have been done to understand the actual problem. He was again taken to Christian Missionary Hospital and after blood test, it was found the child was infected with hepatitis B. He was referred to Gauhati Medical College, Assam for further treatment.

The parent’s relatives suggested them to go to Excelcare Hospital, Guwahati where Iyan could receive best treatment. After few tests, the doctor informed that the child was suffering from chronic liver disease and needed an urgent liver transplant. The parents were shocked. They were worried for the huge cost of the transplant! But a ray of hope came to their life when the parents met Dr. Vikram Kumar from Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, New Delhi, who used to visit Excelcare Hospital once in a month. After the parents discussed about their poor economic background, Dr. Vikram informed them about MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan.

With the support from Anudaan, few other NGO’s and the hospital concession on transplant cost, Iyan successfully underwent a liver transplant on the February 23, 2022. MOHAN Foundation sanctioned Rs 2 Lakh for his liver transplant.

Iyan is slowly resuming a normal life. His parents are very happy and excited about his future. They wish that their son becomes a doctor in future.
