On December 19, 2021 Mohan Foundation’s Anudaan Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru requesting financial aid for Master Likhith SD’s liver Transplant, who was suffering from Wilson’s disease with decompensated liver disease and needed an urgent liver transplant. Wilson’s disease is an inherited disorder in which copper isn’t eliminated properly and instead accumulates, possibly to a life-threatening level.
Master Likhith SD, age 8 years hails from Sindigere village, Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka. He belongs to a poor family. His father is a farmer, and also teaches the school children in his village. He goes house to house for giving tuitions. The child had health related issues such as fluid accumulation in his abdomen (ascites) and loss of appetite. He started to lose weight and was having on and off fever. The father was earning about Rs. 20,000 per month (which came from his agricultural land and teaching school children) but during COVID 19 pandemic, the family income took a massive hit. In addition, they also had to borrow money from relatives and friends for Master Likhith’s treatment. With the meagre income of the family, it was very tough for them to pay a huge cost of Rs 15 lakhs for their beloved son’s liver transplant.
At St. John’s Hospital, Bengaluru, the doctors informed the parents that child suffered from liver disease and referred the family to Aster CMI Hospital. After physical examination and tests, it was found that Likhith was suffering from chronic liver disease. The doctors informed them that their son needed an urgent liver transplant. A couple of tests later, the mother found out that she was the potential liver donor for her son and that she would be able to save her son’s life by donating a part of her liver. The sign of relief was for a short time as the hospital’s estimation for transplant came around Rs. 15 Lakhs.
After the parents discussed about their poor economic background, the doctors at Aster CMI Hospital informed them about MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan. This information gave them a new hope and confidence. With the support from Anudaan, few other NGO’s and the hospital concession on transplant cost, Master Likhith successfully underwent a liver transplant on the December 28, 2021. MOHAN Foundation sanctioned Rs 2 Lakh for his liver transplant.
Both mother and son are recovering well. Likhith is now very happy to receive a second life and he is excited for his future. His ambition is to become a cricketer and play for his country, India.
“Lots of gratitude to MF’s Anudaan team for saving our son’s life with their financial support. We are impressed by their good and lifesaving work”- Mr S.D. Dhananjay- Father
