On February 12, 2022, Mohan Foundation’s Anudaan Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from Manipal Hospitals, Bengaluru requesting financial aid for Master Sandeep K.B’s liver Transplant, who was diagnosed with acute liver failure secondary to Wilson’s disease. He was in need of an urgent liver transplant. 

 

Master Sandeep K.B, age 10 belongs to a poor family in K Byadarahalli village, district-Hassan, Karnataka. His father works as a farmer, earning Rs. 5,000 per month. Hence, it was difficult for him to pay for medicines and treatment of his son. He spent all his savings, family loan amount in his son’s treatment and there was not a single penny left with him at the time of child’s liver transplant.

 

Sandeep used to be a healthy and active child but at the age of 8, he started falling sick. He suffered from mild fever, paleness of eyes & stomach swelling. Baffled parents took him to a local hospital near their hometown. The doctor prescribed some medicines but Sandeep’s health condition continued to deteriorate. For further treatment, they brought Sandeep to Manipal Hospitals, Bengaluru where they were informed that the child was suffering from chronic liver disease and needed an urgent liver transplant.The shocked and confused parents were only worried for the huge cost of the transplant, i.e., Rs. 15 Lakh.

 

The parents discussed about their poor economic condition with the doctors at Manipal Hospitals and requested them for help. The parents came to know about MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan, providing financial aid for transplants of poor patients. With the support from Anudaan, few other NGO’s and the hospital concession on transplant cost, Sandeep successfully underwent a liver transplant on the February 21, 2022. MOHAN Foundation sanctioned Rs 2.5 Lakh for his liver transplant.

 

Sandeep received a second chance to live and his parents are very happy and excited about his future. Slowing resuming a normal life, Sandeep has started going to school. He aspires to be an engineer.
