In November, 2021, MOHAN Foundation’s “Anudaan- Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from Niramaya Charitable Trust, Gurugram, Haryana requesting financial aid for Mrs. Rukman Ahirwar’s corneal transplant.

Mrs. Rukman Ahirwar, age 70 belongs to Chattarpur, Madhya Pradesh. She has struggled so much in her life. She has been widowed for many years. Her husband passed away in 1993. From raising four children alone to taking care of her home and small agricultural land, she has done it all single handedly. Her youngest son is the sole earner in the family who works as a daily wage labourer.   She had been suffering from a corneal eye condition called cataracts. A cataract is a layer that has grown over a person’s eye that prevents them from seeing properly. Her left eye cataracts has resulted in serious sight loss and has affected her ability to work and be independent.

Mrs. Rukman’s major eye complications started in January, 2021. She suffered from left eye pain, irritation and cloudy vision. After getting medication for some months, she was taken to a local eye clinic in Chattarpur, Madhya Pradesh. After few eye tests, it was found that she was suffering from a serious eye syndrome called cataracts on her left eye. The family was in shock when they heard about it.

There was no sign of improvement in Mrs. Rukman’s eye condition after several visits to local eye clinics and medications. Her left eye vision had completely vanished and eyeball stopped moving. The family was frightened to see her condition. The family had already spent huge amount of money in her treatment and lost all hopes.

Mrs. Rukman’s youngest son, who works as a daily wage labourer in Rewari, Haryana was informed about Ahooja Eye & Dental Institute in Gurugram for affordable and better treatment. He brought his mother to Gurugram and after few check-ups, the family was informed by the eye specialist at Ahooja Eye & Dental Institute that Mrs. Rukman was in urgent need of a corneal transplant as her eye condition was critical. The family informed Ahooja team that they had spent all the money they had in Mrs. Rukman’s eye treatment and that they could not afford to pay for the transplant. The family was informed about Ahooja Eye & Dental Institute’s trust, Niramaya Charitable Trust.

Niramaya team approached MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan team for financial aid to support Mrs. Rukman Ahirwar’s corneal transplant. Anudaan team contributed Rs. 20,000 towards the transplant which was successfully performed on 02-11-2021.
