On July 5, 2022, MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan- “Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from Sahayadri Super Specialty Hospital, Pune, Maharashtra requesting financial aid for Mrs. Kanchan B Pedhambekar liver transplant, who was suffering from decompensated chronic liver disease with HCV related etiology which affects the liver.

Mrs. Kanchan B Pedhambekar, age 34 years, hails from Pedhambe village, a town in Chiplun Ratnagiri (Kokan) district of Maharashtra. She belongs to a poor family. Both her husband and son work as daily wage labourers in a local farm. With the insufficient family income, it was difficult for them to pay the huge cost of Mrs. Kanchan’s liver transplant which was Rs 15 Lakh. 

Mrs. Kanchan was suffering from stomach pain, fever, urine problem. When her health condition got worst, she was taken to a local hospital, where the family received a shocking news. After few tests, it was affirmed that Mrs. Kanchan was suffering from a chronic liver disease. She was then immediately admitted to Sahayadri Super Specialty Hospital, Pune where the doctors took her to an emergency room. The doctors informed the family that the patient needed an immediate liver transplant in order to survive. 

It was found out that the daughter was the perfect match for her mother and that she would be able to save her life by donating a portion of her liver. But still, the biggest challenge for the family was to arrange the huge amount to pay for the transplant.  

After discussing about the family’s poor economic situation, the doctors at Sahayadri Super Specialty Hospital, Pune informed them about MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan. This information gave them a new hope. With support from MOHAN Foundation, few other NGOs and hospital’s concession on transplant cost, Mrs. Kanchan successfully underwent a liver transplant on October 14, 2022. MOHAN Foundation sanctioned Rs. 50,000 for her liver transplant.

Both mother and daughter are recovering well. Mrs. Kanchan is very happy to receive a second chance to live.

On August 13, 2022, MOHAN Foundation’s “Anudaan- Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from Bombay Hospital and Medical Research Center, Mumbai, Maharashtra requesting financial aid for Mrs. Rupali Ajay Jadhav, who was suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) from last four years.  She needed an urgent kidney transplant.

Mrs. Rupali Jadhav, age 32 years hails from Malad East, Mumbai, Maharashtra.  She belongs to a poor family. Her husband (who happily donated his kidney to his wife) is a mechanic in a garage in Mumbai. The family was surviving on their savings and with the meager income, it was impossible for the husband to bear the huge cost i.e., Rs. 8.70 Lakh for Rupali’s kidney transplant. 

After the husband discussed about his family’s poor economic situation, the doctors and transplant coordinator at Bombay Hospital and Medical Research Center, Mumbai informed them about MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan. This information gave them a new hope.

“Nothing is more valuable than the life of my wife. We have been in the hospital for two weeks now. And there is hardly any money to afford medicines and to pay the huge cost of the kidney transplant. What do I do now? I just want my wife to live” said the distressed husband to the Anudaan representative 

With support from Anudaan, few other NGOs and the hospital’s concession on transplant cost, Mrs. Rupali Jadhav successfully underwent a kidney transplant on September 7, 2022. MOHAN Foundation sanctioned Rs. 50,000 for the kidney transplant. 

Both Wife and Husband are recovering well. Rupali is very happy to receive a second chance to live and she is now excited for her future. She wants to start a new business and aims to be a successful entrepreneur in future.

On May 31, 2022, MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan- “Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from Nanavati Max Super Specialty Hospital, Mumbai, Maharashtra requesting financial aid for Mr. Santosh Shinde, who was suffering from HCV related chronic liver disease with Hepatocellular Carcinoma which is the most common type of primary liver cancer. Hepatocellular carcinoma occurs most often in people with chronic liver diseases, such as cirrhosis caused by hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection. He was in need of an urgent liver transplant. 

Mr. Santosh Shinde, age 45, hails from Mulund East, Mumbai, Maharashtra. He used to work as a taxi driver, but he had quit work due to his poor health condition. Both his sons were pursuing higher education. 

It was a very difficult situation for the family as the only earning member of the family was diagnosed with such life-threatening disease. The elder son had to start working to run the house and to manage his father’s medical treatment. However, with the meager income of the family, it was very tough for them to pay a huge cost i.e., Rs. 18 lakh for Santosh’s liver transplant. 

The wife found out that she was a perfect match for her husband and that she would be able to save him by donating a portion of her liver. But the main challenge before the family was to raise funds for the transplant. They were worried and hopeless as they did not have money to pay for the transplant.

With the help of doctors and transplant coordinators at Nanavati MAX Hospital, the family could receive financial assistance from MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan. With support from Anudaan, few other NGOs and the hospital’s concession on transplant cost, Santosh Shinde successfully underwent a liver transplant on August 5, 2022. MOHAN Foundation sanctioned Rs. 50,000 for his liver transplant.

Both Wife and husband are recovering well. Santosh is very happy to receive a second chance to live, and excited to begin work again.

On June 27, 2022, MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan- ‘Making Transplants Affordable’ team received an email from SwaNetra Eye Hospital, Jaipur, Rajasthan requesting financial aid for Mr Om Prakash’s corneal transplant.

Mr. Om Prakash, age 63 belongs to Mahendragarh, Haryana. He used to work as a construction labourer but he had to quit his work due to his eye problem. Both his sons are also working as construction laborer.

Mr Om Prakash’s eye complications started in April 2020. He suffered from left eye pain, irritation and cloudy vision He had been suffering from a corneal eye condition called cataracts and his left eye cataracts had resulted in serious sight loss and had affected his daily functioning enormously. After getting medication for some months, he was taken to SwaNetra eye hospital for further treatment. He was given medicines for some months and later, he underwent his first corneal grafting surgery.

Due to the lack of care, treatment and follow up checkup, Mr. Om Prakash again started having complications in his eye and suffered from cloudy vision. He was once again taken to SwaNetra eye hospital, where the family was informed that his corneal graft had been rejected and he immediately needed a second corneal transplant.

The family informed SwaNetra team that they had spent all the money they had and could not afford to pay for the second transplant. SwaNetra team approached Anudaan team for financial aid for supporting Mr Om Prakash’s second corneal transplant. Anudaan team contributed Rs. 20,000 towards the transplant which was successfully performed on July 22, 2022.

On March 16, 2022, Mohan Foundation’s Anudaan Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from New Era Hospital & Research Institute, Nagpur, Maharashtra requesting financial aid for  Master Mohd. Abbas Ali Haider’s liver Transplant, who was suffering from Extrahepatic Biliary Atresia with Cirrhosis. He was in need of an urgent liver transplant. 

Master Mohd Abbas Ali Haider, age 9 months, hails from Mominpura, Nagpur, Maharashtra. He belongs to a poor family. His father works as a mechanical labourer, earning Rs. 5000/ per month. With the meagre income, it was difficult for him to pay for medicines and treatment of his son. 

Abbas Ali suffered from mild fever, paleness of eyes & stomach swelling when he was 5 months old. Since many people suspected that Abbas Ali was suffering from jaundice, he was given ayurveda medicine to cure jaundice. Later, he was also taken to a local hospital for blood test to understand the actual problem. It was found that the child was infected with hepatitis B. He was immediately referred to New Era Hospital & Research Institute, Nagpur for better treatment. After few tests, the doctor informed that Abbas Ali’s health condition was critical as he was suffering from Extrahepatic Biliary Atresia with Cirrhosis. He needed an urgent liver transplant in order to survive. The parents were shocked. They were worried for the huge cost of the transplant. His family knew that if they could not arrange the money, their son would not be able to lead a normal life. Their income and savings were all used for his treatment and now they didn’t know whom to turn to. They approached Anudaan team after they were informed of the same by the hospital.

With the support from Anudaan, few other NGO’s and the hospital concession on transplant cost, Abbas Ali successfully underwent a liver transplant on June 20, 2022. MOHAN Foundation sanctioned Rs 1 Lakh for his liver transplant.

Abbas Ali is slowly resuming a normal life. His parents are very happy and excited about his future. They wish that their son becomes a doctor in future.

On May 09, 2022, MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan- “Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from SwaNetra Eye Hospital, Jaipur, Rajasthan requesting financial aid for Mr Sugar Singh’s corneal transplant. 

Mr. Sugar Singh, age 53 belongs to Karauli, Rajasthan. He is a farmer and the sole earner in the family. He works on his small agricultural land, which is the main source of income for his family. Due to poor economic situation, he could not afford to pay for his eye treatment and corneal transplant.  He had been suffering from a corneal eye condition called cataracts. His right eye cataracts had resulted in serious sight loss and had affected his ability to work and be independent. 

The family informed SwaNetra team that they could not afford to pay for the corneal transplant. SwaNetra team approached Anudaan team for financial aid for supporting Mr Sugar Singh’s transplant. Anudaan team contributed Rs. 20,000 towards the transplant which was successfully performed on June 01, 2022. This support was provided from a grant received from Century Plyboards India Limited

On May 23, 2022, Anudaan- Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket, New Delhi requesting financial aid for Master Anhadveer Singh, diagnosed with Extrahepatic Biliary Atresia (EHBA), an inflammatory fibrosclerosing cholangiopathy of infancy, affecting both the extrahepatic and intrahepatic bile ducts to a variable extent, which is the leading indication for liver transplantation in children.  The child belonged to a poor family and was in need of an urgent liver transplant. Hence, the hospital made a lifesaving decision to provide financial support to the family for Master Anhadveer Singh’s liver transplant. 

Master Anhadveer Singh, age 10 is from Tarn Taran Sahib, Punjab. He belongs to a low-income family that could never afford such an expensive transplant. His father has a small agricultural land which is the only source of income for the family. He has been borrowing money from his relatives for his son’s liver transplant. 

The parents discussed their situation with the doctors at Max. They were told about crowd funding and MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan for financial support for the transplant. 

MOHAN Foundation contributed Rs. 1 Lakh for the transplant and with the support from few other NGOs and MAX Hospital’s subsidized transplant cost, Master Anhadveer Singh successfully underwent a liver transplant on May 26, 2022.

Both son and mother, who happily donated a portion of her liver to his beloved son, are recovering well. Anhadveer wants to join Indian Army one day so that he could serve his country in a same way as he received support and blessings from all his well-wishers from different parts of the country.

On May 7, 2022, MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan- “Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru requesting financial aid for Baby Kanika S.K. 

Kanika was suffering from Wilson’s disease, a rare inherited disorder that causes copper to accumulate in liver, brain and other vital organs. The disease was detected too late and her liver had already sustained a lot of damage hence and therefore she required an urgent liver transplant. 

Kanika, age 8, hails from Tumakuru, Karnataka. She belongs to a poor family. Her father is a small agricultural businessman, earning Rs. 20,000 per month which has been mostly utilized for his daughter’s treatment and medicines. The family had to borrow money from their relatives and friends as they could not afford the huge cost of their daughter’s liver transplant. 

A Few months ago, Kanika started falling sick and things took a turn for the worse as she started experiencing stomach aches and would vomit everything she ate. After receiving treatment from local hospital, Kanika was taken to Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru. Soon, her condition deteriorated to the point where she had to be rushed to the ICU. She was in a critical condition after her bilirubin levels went up, and she was unconscious for few days. At that moment, her family thought she was going to leave them all forever. Thankfully, with plasma therapy and five rounds of dialysis, her condition was stabilized. However the family was told that her disease has crossed the stage where medicines could help and only a liver transplant could save her life.

The mother immediately agreed to be the donor but they had no means to bear that huge transplant surgery cost of Rs 15 lakh. The hospital then approached the Anudaan team. With the support from MOHAN Foundation, few other NGOs and the hospital’s concession on transplant cost, Baby Kanika successfully underwent a liver transplant on May 20, 2022. Anudaan sanctioned Rs 1 lakh towards her surgery.

Both the mother and daughter are doing well. Baby Kanika is very happy and excited. She has started her education. Her ambition is to become a portraitist as she is very fond of art and craft.

On May 6, 2022, MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan- “Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from MAX Super Specialty Hospital, Saket, New Delhi requesting financial aid for Master Aryan Singh’s liver transplant, who was suffering from Wilson’s disease, a rare inherited disorder that causes copper to accumulate in liver, brain and other vital organs. Master Aryan was brought to the hospital in a very critical situation. He was in need of an urgent liver transplant. 

Master Aryan Singh, age 9 is from Mandawali Fazalpur, New Delhi. He belongs to a poor family. His father works as a housekeeping staff in a hotel, earning Rs. 8,000 per month which was not sufficient for his son’s treatment and medicines. The family had to borrow money from their relatives and friends as they could not afford the huge cost of their son’s liver transplant. 

After receiving treatment from local hospital, Aryan was taken to MAX Super Specialty Hospital, Saket, New Delhi. His health condition deteriorated to the point where he had to be rushed to the ICU. He was in a critical condition after his bilirubin levels went up. He was unconscious for few days. That moment was very frightful for the family as they started thinking that Aryan was going to leave them all forever. Fortunately, his condition was stabilized after plasma therapy and few rounds of dialysis. But later, his disease surpassed the stage where medicines could help and only a liver transplant could save his life.

The family was relieved when they found out that Aryan’s mother, was a suitable donor. But the hefty price of the surgery, i.e.; Rs 16.5 lakh left them completely disheartened. After a lot of discussion with the doctors at MAX Super Specialty Hospital, the family was informed about MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan. This information gave them hope. With the support from MOHAN Foundation, few other NGOs and the hospital’s concession on transplant cost, Master Aryan Singh successfully underwent a liver transplant on May 10, 2022. Anudaan sanctioned Rs 1 lakh towards his surgery.

Both the mother and son are doing well. Aryan is very happy and excited now for his future. He has started his education. His ambition is to join the police force.

On March 24, 2022, MOHAN Foundation’s Anudaan- “Making Transplants Affordable” team received an email from Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai requesting financial aid for Mr Anand Kadam’s liver transplant. He had been diagnosed with end stage liver disease and needed an urgent liver transplant.   

Anand Kadam, age 46, hails from Kharkopar, Distt- Raigad, Maharashtra. He is the sole breadwinner in the family. He is a farmer, who worked on his own agricultural land which he had to sell to be able to pay for his medicines and treatment of liver disease. With the meager income, it was very difficult for him to keep the family going as well as bear the huge medical expenses. 

In November 2020, Anand started showing signs of illness. His eyes turned yellow and he complained of stomach ache. His liver had started to fail. After multiple hospital visits, he was informed of liver failure at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai. He was told he needed an urgent liver transplant.

The family obviously could not afford the huge cost of liver transplant, i.e. Rs. 17.5 Lakh. A ray of hope came to their life when they heard about MOHAN Foundation’s lifesaving initiative-Anudaan. They were informed that hospital would approach MOHAN Foundation for financial aid. 

Anudaan Team looked closely at the request and after receiving the required information and the obligatory documents, decided to support Mr Anand Kadam with his liver transplant. MOHAN Foundation motivated the hospital to give some discount in transplant cost as the family’s economic condition was poor. MOHAN Foundation contributed Rs 50,000 and with support from other NGOs, Anand successfully underwent a liver transplant on April 05, 2022. His wife happily came forward to donate a portion of her liver for saving her spouse’s life. 

Anand is slowly resuming a normal life and aspiring to start a construction business in future.
